Overview

The onslaught of the coronavirus pandemic completely transformed the way that our society functioned. It brought new changes in almost every aspect of our lives. One of the most significant (and most contested) changes was in the education sector.

Schools and higher education facilities were forced to move entirely online, using platforms like Zoom to conduct classes. While Zoom learning has its benefits — learning comfortably and safely from home, sharing information via the share screen feature, learning asynchronous and synchronous — many people, students and instructors alike, experienced issues with this technology.

Slow internet connection and isolation aside, Zoom learning saw a rise in distraction and a decrease in attention span. This, in turn, has had a negative effect on student performance in these classes.

This project seeks to explore why Zoom and online learning creates a distracting environment for students and how that impacts their performance in their classes.
